Zoey

I turn my face to his, taking a deep breath as I stare into his pale blue eyes. They’re so kind right now. I wonder if they’ll stay that way all night. Shane’s fingers trace along my hairline before he leans forward and rests his forehead against mine. His lips part as he kisses me softly before placing a pair of headphones on my ears.

“I’ll have to take you out again in the day time. The view will get more interesting as we approach the city lights.” The helicopter tilts dramatically when we start moving forward instead of straight up and I squeeze his hand so hard my nails dig into his skin. “Relax, Z,” he says, kissing my cheek.

The helicopter isn’t the ride that has me so anxious. I can’t talk about it with him because the pilot can hear our every word, but maybe that’s for the best. Instead we’re communicating nonverbally with flirtatious glances, hand squeezes, and quick kisses.

Shane’s been pretty volatile today and I hope his sweet side sticks around for the rest of the night. I start to fidget nervously as I spot the city lights off in the distance. He notices, grabbing my shaky hand and pulling it to his lips, kissing it over and over again.

I’m ready for this, well, as ready as I’ll ever be. It’s a life experience I need to get over with one way or another. I never thought it would happen under such peculiar circumstances with a total head case that’s been holding me captive for weeks. Hell, I didn’t even expect to have feelings for the guy. I figured it would just happen the old fashioned way. When I got too drunk at a party.

My palms are sweaty and my entire body is tingling as the helicopter lands on the top of a skyscraper. It’s insanely windy and cold up here, but Shane insists that we still have to sieze the opportunity to take in the incredible view. The streetlights stretch out for miles in perfect rows, it’s so beautiful. I’m engulfed in his embrace, the warmth of his body shielding me from the chilly air whipping around us.

Shane’s demeanor changes on the elevator ride down to his apartment. His shoulders square and his eyes harden as they look me up and down.

“I don’t know if I’m ready for this,” I confess, staring down at the floor.

His body crushes mine to the wall and he exhales in a frustrated grunt as his fingers lift my chin. “Get ready,” he rasps, his lips barely brushing against mine, but he doesn’t kiss me. “I am not accustomed to this level of sexual frustration. It’s been a long day and I need to unwind.”

“Using me?”

A cocky laugh escapes the arrogant grin crossing his face. “What are you so afraid of, Z? A pinch and a little blood?”

“No. It’s you. As soon as you get horny, you get so… different,” I explain.

“Different how?”

“Distant.”

“We’re about to get a lot closer,” he laughs.
